Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, respected Islamic cleric Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi condemned what he described as U.S. President Donald Trump’s increasing hostility toward Muslims, accusing him of fueling Islamophobia and undermining global unity.
The outspoken scholar argued that Trump’s words and policies encourage anti-Muslim discrimination in America and beyond, thereby threatening peaceful coexistence among nations.
He cited recent events in New York City, where a Muslim mayoral candidate reportedly faced backlash because of his faith, as evidence of religious intolerance growing under Western democracies that claim to uphold freedom of belief.
“Just look at New York,” Gumi said. “A Muslim is contesting for mayor, people support him, but Trump threatens to cut off funding to the city just because of that. With this level of Islamophobia, how can I welcome Trump to Nigeria? He’s not coming to fight terrorism; he’s coming to target Muslims.”
Gumi warned that such rhetoric could worsen global divisions and inflame religious conflicts.
He urged Muslim leaders worldwide to stand together to defend Islam’s reputation and counter efforts aimed at misrepresenting the religion for political gain.
