Riley: He Said How Come Fulani Militia Have AK-47, RPGs And They Pass Military Checkpoints - Osemwegie

WASHINGTON D.C., USA — During a recent advocacy visit to the United States, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore raised concerns about the ongoing attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria, questioning how armed groups continue to access sophisticated weapons despite military checkpoints.

The concerns were highlighted by Stephen Osemwegie, President of Save Nigeria Group, USA, during an interview with Channels Television.

Osemwegie explained that the delegation had traveled to Washington to present eyewitness accounts and evidence of targeted killings to U.S. officials, seeking international attention and pressure on Nigerian authorities.

According to Osemwegie, Congressman Moore expressed shock over the level of weaponry in the hands of attackers, specifically mentioning the Fulani militia.

“He said, how come the Fulani militia have AK-47s, RPGs, and they pass through military checkpoints? How come they are armed while the Christians being targeted are unarmed?” Osemwegie recounted.

Moore’s remarks drew attention to critical security failures, questioning why Nigerian security forces have not been able to stop the flow of illegal weapons or prevent militia groups from repeatedly attacking vulnerable communities.

The delegation from Save Nigeria Group presented detailed reports and survivor testimonies during meetings with U.S. officials.

Osemwegie said these sessions were intended to highlight the humanitarian crisis and security challenges facing Nigerian Christians, as well as the ineffectiveness of military checkpoints in halting the movement of armed groups.

The group emphasized that despite repeated attacks, many communities remain unarmed and defenseless, making them highly vulnerable to organized assaults.

The testimonies prompted American officials to ask pointed questions and express concern about the unchecked spread of arms and the vulnerability of civilian populations.

Osemwegie noted that the engagement in Washington forms part of a sustained campaign to draw international attention to the crisis in Nigeria.

By bringing survivor accounts and official inquiries to foreign governments, the Save Nigeria Group hopes to push for accountability and strengthen pressure on Nigerian authorities to take decisive action against armed groups.

“The discussion underscored the urgent need for stronger oversight and accountability,” Osemwegie said.

“It was clear from the questions raised that the international community is watching and increasingly concerned about the flow of weapons and the repeated targeting of civilian communities.”

Analysts say the situation in Nigeria has drawn global attention due to the persistent insecurity and targeted killings, which have affected tens of thousands of residents.

Efforts by local advocacy groups, including Save Nigeria Group, aim to ensure that foreign governments apply diplomatic pressure to compel Nigerian authorities to respond effectively.

The delegation’s visit also highlighted the need for long-term solutions, such as monitoring weapon imports, improving military oversight, and protecting vulnerable populations from armed attacks.

Osemwegie shared that the key exchange, in which Congressman Moore questioned the flow of weapons to militia groups, can be viewed in a video between 45:42 and 45:54 on the official channel.

The advocacy visit demonstrates how civil society groups are leveraging international platforms to raise awareness about domestic security crises and the humanitarian toll of armed attacks.
