Honourable George Ozodinobi, who serves in the House of Representatives, has raised remarks concerning the life imprisonment handed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking openly on the floor of the House, Ozodinobi stated that Justice Omotosho, who presided over Kanu’s case, reached his verdict after carefully reviewing all the evidence presented in court.
He highlighted that the judge’s ruling was purely based on the law, fulfilling his judicial duties without bias or personal influence.
In an interview aired on TV Platinum, Ozodinobi emphasized that the court’s ruling does not necessarily mark the end of the matter.
He acknowledged that while he is neither a legal practitioner nor a judge, as a lawmaker he possesses insight into how government decisions can contribute to national peace and stability.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s boldness, suggesting that the President now holds an extraordinary opportunity to intervene in the matter and potentially exercise executive discretion.
Ozodinobi also pointed out that Kanu’s legal team has not filed an appeal against the life sentence, which means the President still has the legal room to grant clemency.
Within the 90-day window stipulated by law, the President could decide to pardon Kanu and order his release.
Ozodinobi underscored that this constitutional provision allows the executive branch to act in ways that complement judicial rulings, ensuring justice is balanced with broader national interests.
He said, "The Judge who jailed him, Omotosho, saw things before him that made him to jail him for life. Good enough. But Mr President has the greatest opportunity now."
