Col Yahaya Lakale has spoken about a deadly attack carried out by bandits in Kasuwan Daji, a community in the Katagonra area of Niger State.
In a video shared by Channels Television, according to him, the attack did not happen suddenly. There were clear warning signs long before the killings took place.
He explained that the bandits had been moving around the area for more than a week before the attack.
During this time, they were seen patrolling nearby villages without any strong response from security agencies.
One of the most shocking incidents happened before the new year. According to Lakale, the bandits entered a man's house and forced his children outside.
They allowed the girls to go but took five of his boys and killed them in front of him.
Lakale said the area has become almost an ungoverned space, where people feel abandoned by authorities. He stated that the attack could have been completely prevented if action had been taken early.
Community members had already identified some informants who were helping the bandits and were ready to point them out to security officials.
Lakale noted that more than 50 people were killed. In addition, over 100 women and children were taken away by the bandits.
He stressed that with proper response, many lives could have been saved and the community would not have suffered such heavy losses.
In his words, "They entered one man's house, brought out his children, they left the girls, they brought out five of his boys and slaughtered them in his presence. This happened before the new year."
