Fubara: In The Forthcoming Election, We Will Have Two Governorship Candidates From The APC — Nwala

In a recent interview on TVC News, Chetam Nwala, a lawyer and activist, weighed in on the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, linking the ongoing confrontation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and members of the State House of Assembly to wider power struggles that could significantly shape future electoral outcomes in the state.

According to Nwala, the unresolved tensions within the ruling political structure have already set the stage for internal fragmentation, warning that “In the forthcoming election, we will have two governorship candidates from the APC,” a development he described as a direct consequence of persistent conflicts and competing political interests.

He explained that what initially appeared as a disagreement between the executive and the legislature has evolved into a full-scale struggle for dominance, with far-reaching implications for party unity and governance.

Nwala argued that the impeachment threats, court interventions, and political alignments suggest that the crisis is less about constitutional accountability and more about control of political structures ahead of the next election cycle.

The activist further alleged that the Rivers State House of Assembly has been drawn into the conflict in a manner that undermines its independence, stating that public perception now leans towards the belief that lawmakers are acting under external influence rather than in the interest of their constituents.

He noted that this perception has weakened legislative credibility and heightened political tension across the state.

Nwala also warned that prolonged instability could erode public trust in democratic institutions, particularly if governance continues to take a back seat to political battles.

He stressed that ordinary citizens ultimately bear the cost of elite power struggles through stalled development and policy paralysis.

He concluded by urging political leaders to prioritise dialogue and constitutional order, cautioning that failure to resolve the crisis peacefully would not only deepen divisions within the APC but also create lasting consequences for Rivers State’s political stability and democratic future.
