Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, has reacted to a viral video featuring Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, in which the governor suggested that speaking truth to power is no longer possible under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Olayinka made his reaction public via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
His comments followed the circulation of a video showing Governor Makinde speaking at an event where he praised former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for his leadership style while in office.
In the video, Makinde reflected on his early months as governor during the COVID-19 pandemic, recalling a meeting where state governors were advised to impose lockdowns.
He explained that his decision not to lock down Oyo State was influenced by Osinbajo’s position at the time.
Makinde further compared that period with the current administration, referencing a controversial tax bill and arguing that requests for broader consultation were ignored.
According to him, such experiences demonstrate that “you cannot speak truth to power in this dispensation.”
Reacting to the remarks, Olayinka accused Makinde of turning against President Tinubu after previously seeking his support.
In a brief but pointed post, he wrote that the Oyo State governor was “abusing the same President he went to beg,” suggesting inconsistency in Makinde’s stance.
The exchange has since sparked discussions on social media, with supporters and critics debating the implications of Makinde’s comments and Olayinka’s response, as well as broader issues of governance, dissent, and political loyalty under the current administration.
