In an emotional account, Damipe Adekoya shared how becoming pregnant outside marriage as a pastor’s daughter set off a series of events that led to her father suffering a stroke and losing the church he had led for 17 years.
She revealed that fear and shame made her hide the pregnancy for five months. During that time, she stayed away from home but continued attending the same church.
When she eventually told her parents through a text message, they reacted with understanding and encouraged her to return home. However, internal church tensions soon turned the situation into a major scandal.
According to her, the most painful moment of her life came on the Sunday her father announced to more than 300 church members that she was pregnant and would not be getting married in the church.
Shortly after making the announcement, he collapsed, and the incident sparked unrest within the congregation that ultimately led to him being forced out of the ministry.
Damipe Adekoya recounted:
“My dad called me and said the Holy Spirit told him to inform the church that I was pregnant. The church was full that day.
He stood at the entrance singing ‘You are the Lord’ before making the announcement that I would probably get married the following year but not in that church because I was pregnant. Shortly after, he collapsed and almost suffered a stroke.
The church erupted in chaos. People began spreading the news in bulletins that the pastor’s daughter was pregnant. Some of the same people my dad had helped led the rebellion.
They even gave us a quit notice to leave the mission house. My father never took a break for 17 years and even invested his own money in the church, yet they still forced him out. I feel deeply hurt that everything happened because of me.”
