Professor Chidi Odinkalu has sharply criticized Nigeria’s Defence leadership, raising concerns over priorities amid ongoing insecurity across the country.
The remarks were made in a social media post by Odinkalu, a well-known public affairs commentator and former chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission.
His statement comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent attacks by armed groups targeting both civilians and security personnel in various regions.
In the post, Odinkalu took aim at the Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, accusing him of misplaced focus while members of the armed forces face deadly threats.
He stated, “While terrorists slaughter uniformed men & women - officers & NCOs alike - in different parts of the country, Nigeria's Defence Minister casually advertises himself as a wholly owned doormat of one political party like that.”
Odinkalu’s criticism underscores growing frustration among observers over the state of national security and the perceived politicization of key institutions.
His comments suggest that the Defence leadership should prioritize addressing the rising casualties among military personnel rather than engaging in political alignment or public displays that could undermine neutrality.
The post has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians echoing concerns about the safety of troops deployed in volatile regions. Others, however, have defended the military leadership, arguing that efforts to combat insecurity are ongoing but often underreported.
