According to a report by This Day Live on Monday, April 27, 2026, Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, has stated that any administration that cannot ensure the safety of lives and property lacks a valid reason to remain in power, presenting a strong critique of the country’s growing insecurity and the broader leadership issues affecting governance.
He attributed the country’s mounting difficulties to ineffective leadership, noting that Nigeria’s standing in global affairs has weakened over time.
He also pointed to the country’s handling of regional relations, especially within the Economic Community of West African States, as an area where leadership lapses have contributed to current challenges.
During an appearance on News Central’s Soni Irabor Live programme over the weekend, Obasanjo remarked that Nigeria no longer plays a significant role in global decision-making processes.
He indicated that the nation’s reduced influence on international matters reflects a wider problem tied to leadership shortcomings.
Obasanjo explained that Nigeria’s inability to actively shape developments beyond its borders shows how far the country has drifted from its previous position of influence.
He stressed that the situation is not limited to foreign affairs but is connected to internal governance issues that have affected the country’s overall direction.
He further highlighted the importance of leadership in managing relationships with neighbouring countries, particularly in situations involving political instability.
According to him, developments in nearby nations require careful handling due to shared historical, cultural, and social ties that bind populations across borders.
Obasanjo also pointed out that Nigeria’s response to events in the West African sub-region has not reflected the level of responsibility expected from a country of its size and influence.
He emphasized that the connections between Nigeria and its neighbours, including familial and ethnic links, make it necessary for the country to approach such situations with greater awareness and strategic consideration.
He said, “It’s leadership. Niger Republic had a coup. Our neighbour. At least 30 per cent of the people of Niger Republic have blood relationship with Nigeria.”
