Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on one of the darkest abuses of local law enforcement in Nigeria's history, the deliberate planting of corpses to incriminate political opponents.
Speaking on TV Platinum, Obasanjo described how individuals would transport dead bodies and place them in the compounds of political rivals.
Once discovered, authorities would arrest the targeted individual. The consequences were severe, with at least one person losing their life as a direct result of such manipulation.
These abuses formed the basis for Nigeria's decision to abolish the native authority police system. The manipulation of local police for political persecution made the institution untenable and dangerous.
Obasanjo also noted that Colombia, despite having abolished a similar structure, reversed course when confronted with terrorism and drug-related crises.
In his words, "In my own eyes I witnessed people bringing dead bodies from other places to the backyard of their political adversary and then getting their political adversary arrested.
And in fact in one case the political adversary was executed, and I believe that was the main reason why we eliminated local native police. But in Columbia they have gone back. They went back when they were faced with terrorism and drug issues."
