Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, warning that any attempt to manipulate the process could amount to what he described as a “civilian coup.”
In an interview with Daily Independent on April 2, 2026, Okonkwo stated that election rigging undermines the very foundation of democracy. He argued that when votes are not fairly counted or are deliberately altered, the process ceases to be a legitimate election.
Drawing a comparison, he said such manipulation is similar to a military takeover, where power is seized without the genuine consent of the people.
Okonkwo emphasized that credible elections depend on transparency, fairness, and respect for the will of voters. According to him, actions such as ballot box snatching and result falsification invalidate the electoral process and erode public trust in democratic institutions.
He warned that if citizens are denied the opportunity to choose their leaders freely, it could lead to unrest and instability.
He further stressed that undermining the electoral system would make it nearly impossible for political change to occur through lawful and peaceful means. In such circumstances, he cautioned, frustration among the electorate could escalate into conflict.
Okonkwo called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to take proactive steps to safeguard the integrity of the elections.
He noted that ensuring transparency and accountability is critical to maintaining public confidence and preventing potential crises.
He also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively monitor the electoral process, insisting that citizens must demand accountability and resist any attempt to manipulate election outcomes.
