According to a report by Punch on Sunday, April 26, 2026,Matthew Hassan Kukah has clarified his ethnic identity, urging Nigerians to stop referring to him as a Hausa man.
The cleric made the statement while addressing questions about his background, emphasizing that he is from Anchuna in Ikulu Chiefdom, located in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
He stressed that although he is widely associated with northern Nigeria, he is not Hausa by origin and should not be identified as such.
Kukah described himself as a “typical Nigerian,” using the opportunity to highlight the importance of accurate representation of ethnic identities in a diverse country.
His remarks come amid ongoing conversations about ethnicity and identity in Nigeria’s socio-political space.
Beyond the clarification, the bishop commended the efforts of the Anambra State government in advancing education.
He noted that available data indicates the state is performing strongly compared to many others, particularly due to its sustained investment in the sector.
According to him, such commitment to education development is commendable and should serve as a model for other states.
Kukah also spoke about his recent appointment as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. He expressed readiness to contribute meaningfully to the institution’s growth, stating that his ambition is not only to meet expectations but to exceed them.
He pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to raise academic standards and strengthen the university’s overall performance.
Reaffirming his stance, Kukah reiterated that Nigerians should recognize his true heritage and avoid misidentifying him, underscoring the broader need for respect and understanding of the country’s diverse cultural backgrounds.
