The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that he is driven by greed, stating that political life where power and money intersect often reveals the true character of individuals.
Wike made the remarks during a media conversation shared by News Central TV, where he responded to criticisms about his motivations in public office.
The former governor of Rivers State insisted that while human beings may have the capacity for greed, it is unfair to single him out as someone motivated by personal gain.
“I’m not a greedy man; I will not agree. Human beings can be greedy. They say when you give a man power and money, you then know the true state of that person. It’s only politics that exposes you to know whom actually we are,” Wike said.
His comments come amid ongoing scrutiny of his leadership style and decisions as FCT minister, with critics often questioning the motives behind his policies and political positions.
Wike, however, maintained that his actions are guided by a commitment to governance rather than personal enrichment.
The minister emphasized that politics provides a unique environment where individuals are tested by access to both authority and resources. According to him, this combination often reveals the true nature of leaders, making it easier for the public to assess their character.
Wike also referenced past experiences in his political career, noting that he had faced what he described as persecution under a previous administration. He suggested that these experiences have shaped his outlook on power, governance, and public perception.
“People forget that I have gone through a lot in politics. There were times when I felt targeted by those in power, and that experience teaches you what power can do and how people react to it,” he said.
