The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the strength and readiness of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, assuring Nigerians that the opposition party remains a formidable force despite ongoing criticisms and internal challenges.
According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, April 3, 2026, Wike made the remarks during a media chat in Abuja, where he addressed a range of political issues, including the state of the PDP and expectations from the current administration led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement that has since sparked widespread reactions, Wike said, “We’re not happy until Tinubu sleeps with each of the families in their houses,” a remark widely interpreted as a metaphor highlighting what he described as the high expectations Nigerians place on political leaders.
The former Rivers State governor explained that Nigerians often demand direct, personal engagement from leaders, expecting them to understand and address the everyday challenges faced by citizens across the country. According to him, this level of expectation can sometimes be unrealistic, but it reflects the depth of public frustration and desire for responsive governance.
Wike used the comment to emphasize the need for citizens to also recognize the limitations of leadership, noting that governance is a collective responsibility that requires both government action and public cooperation.
Speaking further on the PDP’s preparedness for the future, Wike insisted that the party remains structurally sound and politically relevant. He dismissed claims that internal disagreements or defections have weakened the party, stating that such challenges are part of the democratic process.
“The PDP is not a party that can be written off,” he said, adding that it has a long-standing history, strong grassroots presence, and experienced leadership capable of navigating political complexities.
He stressed that the party’s focus is not only on presenting candidates for elections but also on ensuring unity, discipline, and strategic coordination at all levels. According to him, these factors will play a crucial role in determining the party’s success in the 2027 elections.
Wike also pointed out that opposition parties often face heightened scrutiny and pressure, but he expressed confidence that the PDP would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger.
On the broader political landscape, the minister urged Nigerians to engage more critically with political narratives and avoid being swayed by misinformation or sensational statements.
He noted that comments made in political discussions are sometimes taken out of context, leading to unnecessary controversy.
