Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Sochukwudima said he did not expect Ned Nwoko to secure more than 2,000 votes in the election because, according to him, the majority of the party structure and influential stakeholders were fully behind Okowa.
“I was even surprised that Nwoko could get up to 2,000 plus votes in the election,” Sochukwudima stated during the interview.
He went on to explain that several layers of the party leadership reportedly supported Okowa ahead of the primary contest.
According to him, the party’s internal structure strongly favored the former Delta State governor.
“You know why? The structure of the party. We have 98 ward chairmen and the state executive committee. We have the local government chairmen. We have the local government council chairmen, who are members of the party. We have the commissioners. We have the House of Assembly members. We have critical stakeholders and top leaders who are all in support of Ifeanyi Okowa,” he added.
The remarks have since triggered conversations within political circles in Delta State, especially among supporters of both politicians ahead of future electoral battles.
Sochukwudima also used the interview to praise the political legacy of Ifeanyi Okowa, describing him as a leader who left visible development projects across communities in Delta North during his eight years as governor.
According to him, Okowa occupies a special place in the history of the region as the first indigene of Delta North to become governor of the state.
He argued that many residents still remember the projects executed during Okowa’s administration, especially road infrastructure and community development initiatives.
Using his own community as an example, Sochukwudima said residents continue to benefit from roads constructed during the former governor’s tenure.
He added that similar development projects were reportedly carried out in several communities across the senatorial district.
The APC chieftain maintained that such achievements contributed significantly to the strong support Okowa allegedly enjoyed among party stakeholders and grassroots leaders.
Political observers say the comments reflect the growing rivalry and political maneuvering currently shaping politics in Delta State ahead of future elections.
Supporters of Ned Nwoko, however, have continued to insist that the senator remains politically influential and enjoys substantial grassroots backing despite the outcome of the primary process.
Meanwhile, allies of Ifeanyi Okowa argue that his years in office helped build strong political relationships across the state, making him a dominant figure within Delta politics.
As debates over party structure, influence, and grassroots support continue, the comments by Sochukwudima have added another layer to ongoing political discussions surrounding the future of Delta North politics.
