Dan Nwanyanwu, the National Chairman of the , has criticised the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, , over remarks concerning the party’s electoral relevance and legal status.
Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI TV, Nwanyanwu rejected claims allegedly made by the Attorney General that the ZLP failed to secure electoral victories and therefore deserved deregistration by the.
The ZLP chairman described the comments as misleading and inaccurate, insisting that the party remains a constitutionally recognised political organisation with a history of electoral participation and success.
He argued that no government official should misrepresent the status of a registered political party, particularly on issues relating to democracy and constitutional rights.
Expressing his dissatisfaction during the interview, Nwanyanwu said, “I’m saying with due respect, with greatest respect Attorney General, you lied. That is the greatest lie from pit of hell.”
According to him, the statement credited to the Attorney General failed to reflect the party’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.
He maintained that the ZLP has consistently participated in elections and should not be threatened with deregistration based on what he described as a selective interpretation of electoral laws.
Nwanyanwu further warned against actions capable of weakening opposition parties in the country.
He stressed that attempts to suppress smaller political parties through administrative or legal measures could negatively affect Nigeria’s multiparty democratic system.
The ZLP chairman also emphasised the importance of fairness and adherence to constitutional provisions in matters relating to political parties and electoral regulations.
He noted that democracy thrives when political organisations are allowed to operate freely within the framework of the law without intimidation or discrimination.
The controversy followed ongoing discussions surrounding the status of political parties in Nigeria and the powers of the electoral commission regarding party registration and deregistration.
Nwanyanwu’s remarks have since generated reactions among political observers and supporters of opposition parties across the country.
