As reported by DAILY POST on Monday, May 25, 2026, ex-Senator of Kano South, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, has not succeeded in his effort to return to the Senate after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) selected former NARTO head, Alkasim Ibrahim Batayya, as its candidate for the 2027 elections.
Gaya, who recently switched to the NDC after departing from both the APC and ADC, was seeking the party’s nomination for the Kano South senatorial seat but was instead excluded due to a consensus agreement among party members.
This consensus was said to have been formed at a political meeting held at the home of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Kano.
Mansur Kurugu, the party spokesperson, confirmed that Gaya accepted the decision and committed to fully supporting Batayya’s campaign.
He also mentioned that this consensus method would be applied to select other nominees in the state, thus eliminating internal primaries.
A video later emerged showing Gaya publicly backing the party's choice.
This development marks a significant blow for the former senator, who represented Kano South from 2015 to 2023 and previously served as governor of Kano State during the Third Republic.
Batayya is now anticipated to compete against the current occupant of the position, Senator Sumaila, in what is expected to be a highly contested race in 2027.
