Speaking during an interview on TV Platinum on May 17, 2026, Yunusa Tanko recounted a story about former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and an expensive wristwatch reportedly given to him.
Tanko explained that the wristwatch was said to be worth 300 million naira. According to him, Obi considered the item too extravagant and unsuitable for personal use. He stated that Obi preferred that the watch be sold instead of keeping it for himself.
Tanko further said the money realized from the sale of the wristwatch was intended to support the education of Nigerian children.
He described the action as an example of greatness and highlighted it as a reflection of Obi’s priorities and approach to public service.
In his words, “I hear a person was saying that Peter Obi was given a wrist watch worth 300 million Naira and he said that watch is too heavy for him to wear on his hands.
So he said they should go and sell that watch and bring the money for him so that he can use it for the education of the Nigerian child. That is greatness”
