Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Showunmi raised concerns about the state of opposition politics, noting that the absence of clear alignment among key figures has weakened efforts to build a cohesive and formidable front against the ruling party.
He argued that a lack of decisive commitment to political platforms by prominent actors has slowed down the process of consolidating opposition strength.
According to him, there had been expectations for a more coordinated strategy that could unify supporters and strengthen party structures nationwide.
However, he said those expectations have not materialised, leading to growing dissatisfaction among stakeholders within the opposition space.
Showunmi specifically criticised Obi for not clearly aligning with a political party, stating that the situation had hindered potential collaboration.
He remarked that he had anticipated working alongside Obi within a defined political structure but was left disappointed by what he sees as indecision.
The PDP chieftain stressed that unity, discipline, and strategic clarity are essential for any opposition coalition aiming to succeed in future elections.
He warned that continued fragmentation and lack of direction could further weaken opposition credibility and reduce their chances of mounting a strong challenge in 2027.
His comments add to ongoing debates within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as political actors continue to reposition and strategise ahead of the next electoral cycle.
