The woman, identified as Amarachi Chinyere, made the allegations in a video shared on Instagram by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu. In the video, she recounted the events that allegedly led to the violent incident and called on authorities to ensure that justice is served.
Speaking in Pidgin English, Amarachi claimed that the suspect, identified as Agwu Ukpo, had approached her with a proposal for a sexual relationship and offered her N50,000. She said she rejected the offer because she is married.
“One day, that boy asked me, he say he wan f**k me. I tell am say no. He say he go give me N50,000. I tell am no, say I don marry,” she said.
According to her, the rejection created tension between them and marked the beginning of a series of disputes.
Amarachi alleged that during one of the disagreements, Ukpo deliberately poured away a pot of soup she had prepared and emptied it into a plate used for washing hands. She said she reported the incident to his brother, identified as Obinna.
She further claimed that a few days later, she reacted by placing some leftover soup belonging to Ukpo in the same location where he had allegedly disposed of hers. However, she said Obinna intervened and advised her to avoid further confrontation.
The situation reportedly escalated when the suspect accused her of insulting him. Amarachi alleged that he subsequently threatened to beat her and later carried out the threat during another confrontation.
Recounting the incident, she said she had returned from the market and finished cooking when the suspect allegedly disposed of her soup. She said tensions continued until the day of the assault.
According to her account, the suspect repeatedly struck her during the altercation, hitting her on the back, chest, and around her eye. She said a bystander who was recording the incident pleaded with the suspect to stop, but the alleged assault continued.
Amarachi stated that the attack left her injured and weakened, requiring medical attention. She is now demanding that the suspect be prosecuted and compelled to reimburse the medical expenses incurred by her family.
“I want justice. I want the police to take him to court. All the money my husband spent on treatment, he should pay it back,” she said.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media after a video of the alleged assault circulated online, prompting calls for swift action by law enforcement authorities and advocacy groups.
The Abia State Police Command subsequently confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Agwu Ukpo. Police authorities said he is currently under investigation and could face charges including assault and attempted murder, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
