If We Truly Want To Stop Insecurity, You Have To Recruit Fulanis; Fulanis Were First Victims-Kurfi

Dr. Bashir Kurfi, Convener of the Katsina Community Security Initiative, has advocated a more inclusive approach to addressing insecurity in northern Nigeria, saying the involvement of Fulani communities is crucial to defeating banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, on Wednesday, 24 June, 2026, Kurfi argued that security efforts would be more effective if they incorporated members of Fulani communities, whom he said have also suffered greatly from the activities of armed criminal groups.

Making his case, Kurfi said, "If truly we want to stop this, you also have to recruit the Fulanis because the Fulanis were the first victims of this terror that's going on now." 

He explained that many Fulani families have endured attacks, displacement and the destruction of their livelihoods, making them valuable partners in efforts to restore peace.

According to Kurfi, local residents possess vital knowledge about their communities that can help security agencies identify criminal hideouts, gather intelligence and prevent attacks before they occur. 

He warned against stereotyping entire ethnic groups based on the actions of a few criminals, stressing that such an approach could undermine the fight against insecurity.

The security advocate also called for stronger collaboration between government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities. He said building trust with residents would encourage the timely sharing of information needed to dismantle criminal networks operating across rural areas.
