"Kyari Is No Longer The MD, And It Is His Responsibility To Account For His Actions As MD–Oshiomhole

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for the immediate arrest of former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, over allegations of corruption and financial misconduct during his tenure at the state-owned oil company.

Oshiomhole made the demand on Wednesday while speaking on issues relating to accountability and oversight in the management of public resources, insisting that those who previously occupied key public offices must be prepared to account for their stewardship when called upon to do so.

The senator accused Kyari of failing to adequately explain the alleged mismanagement of trillions of naira during his time as head of the NNPCL.

In his reply, Okoye indicated that the information at his disposal suggested that the commission still held a significant amount of the funds.

“May I respond? I can answer, Mr. Chairman. From what I last checked and the last report provided to me, the SEDC should have between 11.5 to 12 billion in its account,” he replied.

Nonetheless, Senator Kalu challenged that figure, mentioning that the data accessible to the committee revealed a different total.

“You have 13.7 billion as of today. No, this is current information, I am communicating with the Central Bank. We are in session,” Kalu remarked.

The previous governor of Abia State informed the management of the commission that the committee could view financial documents and would verify all expenses via proper oversight methods.

“I can retrieve the documents from my office right now. We have also sent the Auditor General. We will audit all activities you have undertaken,” he asserted.

Kalu expressed his unhappiness with the report received from the commission, labeling some of the papers as vague and insufficient.

“I am not impressed. You are presenting us with this mess. Look at that document. Completed and non-essential, what does that mean? It conveys nothing in English. We are not happy with your work,” he remarked.

He also conveyed to the SEDC officials that both he and his fellow committee members were let down by the presentation.

“I am very disappointed. And this committee is extremely, extremely disappointed. I am giving you one week to return and provide us with the entire truth and come back to the committee. Because you are wasting our resources,” Kalu declared.

The senator instructed the commission’s management to come back before the committee the next week with a thorough account of its finances and operations.

The committee chair additionally questioned the expenses concerning office space in Abuja, claiming that the commission had paid N153 million for a single room.

“You have one small office here in Abuja. And you are paying 153 million for just one room. This committee is aware,” he stated.

“We do not want any oversight issues. You know our headquarters is located in Enugu. And we do not wish to hear about any spending. You have spent 153 billion. We possess evidence,” he concluded.

Kalu cautioned that those in the committee had more details about how the commission worked and prompted the management to deliver correct records prior to the upcoming hearing. “Return. We will hold onto these papers,” he finished.
