According to a report by DAILY POST on Tuesday 2nd June 2026, the outcome of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries held in Anambra State and other parts of the country has reportedly created internal tension within the party, placing its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, under increasing political scrutiny.
Reports indicate that the primaries produced several surprise results, with grassroots-backed aspirants defeating some established political figures across federal constituencies and senatorial districts; The development has triggered debates over the party’s internal cohesion and the credibility of its selection process.
Among those said to have secured tickets are Ifeanyi Iwuchukwu (Onitsha North/South Federal Constituency), Eric Ayamene (Idemili North/South Federal Constituency), Ofumelu Vincent Ekene (Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency), and Udekaigbo Chibuzo, PhD (Ihiala Federal Constituency); Others include Chief Ebuka Onunkwo (Anambra South Senatorial District) and Pastor Nonso Nwabueze Oli (Anambra Central Senatorial District). In Anambra North, Senator Tony Nwoye was reported to have emerged unopposed.
The most notable upset was the reported defeat of Senator Victor Umeh in the Anambra Central senatorial contest, a result that has continued to generate reactions within party ranks and among political observers.
Party insiders say the emergence of new candidates has unsettled parts of the established structure, with affected stakeholders now awaiting the national leadership’s final ratification of the primaries’ outcome.
The situation is increasingly seen as a test of both leadership discipline and the party’s commitment to internal democracy, especially as competing interests intensify pressure ahead of final approvals.
Some critics warn that any move to overturn or significantly alter the primary results could damage the party’s public image and raise questions about its democratic credentials.
A party source in Awka, Peter Anaenugwu, said the issue has gone beyond individual victories and defeats, stressing that the handling of the process will determine public confidence in the party.
Meanwhile, the party’s National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan, has reiterated that only the national leadership has the authority to give final approval to candidates.
