My Uncle Was Killed Not Because Of Any Sin But Only Because He Was The Most Senior Officer" — Ironsi

Engineers Emo Aguiyi-Ironsi, the head of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and nephew of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, has defended the legacy of his late uncle, insisting that Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was unfairly blamed for events he did not initiate. According to him, the former military leader became a victim of circumstances rather than wrongdoing.

He explained that Aguiyi-Ironsi had no involvement in the January 1966 military coup, stressing that this fact has long been widely acknowledged. 

Instead, he said the late general assumed leadership because he was the highest-ranking military officer available during a period of severe political instability. 

Faced with a national crisis, he accepted the responsibility of leading the country in an effort to restore order.

Engineer Emo Aguiyi-Ironsi noted that the decision to take over the nation's leadership eventually led to his uncle’s tragic death after spending only six months in office. 

He maintained that the former Head of State did not lose his life because of any personal offense or crime, but because of the position he occupied during a difficult chapter in Nigeria’s history. 

He emphasized that his uncle’s assassination was the result of the responsibilities attached to his office rather than any direct involvement in the coup that triggered the political crisis.
