The industrial action was declared following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that raised serious concerns about the safety of teachers, learners and other education workers across the state.
In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the State Secretary, Olukayode Salami, the NUT said the decision to suspend the strike was taken in line with a directive from the union’s national leadership.
According to the statement, the decision followed an assessment of the security situation and consultations with the Oyo State Government and other relevant stakeholders.
The union instructed all teachers in public primary and secondary schools to resume academic activities from Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The NUT explained that it agreed to end the strike after receiving firm assurances from the state government that efforts were being intensified to secure the release of the kidnapped teachers and pupils.
The government also pledged to strengthen security around schools and communities considered vulnerable to criminal attacks.
Among the commitments made by the government is the creation of a properly equipped Joint Security Task Force to patrol schools and major access routes.
Authorities also promised to sustain rescue operations, provide continuous support to affected families, offer rehabilitation and psychosocial services to rescued victims, and ensure payment of gratuities and other benefits to the families of deceased teachers.
The government further assured the union that it would strengthen the Safe School Initiative through increased public awareness, improved early warning systems, enhanced emergency response mechanisms and stronger community-based intelligence gathering.
Other planned measures include dismantling criminal hideouts, tackling illegal mining and open grazing activities in forest areas, upgrading school infrastructure, ensuring prompt prosecution of criminal suspects, improving the welfare of security personnel and deploying modern technology to improve school security.
The union praised its members for observing the strike peacefully and commended the support of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) throughout the industrial action.
While directing teachers to return to their classrooms, the NUT advised members to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious movements or security threats to the appropriate authorities.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government until lasting measures are put in place to guarantee the safety of teachers, pupils and all stakeholders in the education sector.
