Cardinal John Onaiyekan has been the target of criticism for comments he made about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but a human rights activist and Nigerian lawyer named Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has stepped in to defend the revered clergyman.

Odinkalu praised Onaiyekan's academic record and noted his accomplishments from a young age in a post he made on his official X account on August 2, 2026.

These remarks were in response to criticisms from various sectors following Cardinal Onaiyekan's comments regarding President Tinubu in an interview with Arise TV, which caused controversy and condemnation among those who supported the current administration.
