Chief Johnny Ucheaga, a legal practitioner with over 40 years of experience at the Bar and former National Administrative Secretary of the defunct National Centre Party of Nigeria (NCPN), told The Sun correspondent that many Nigerians viewed the threat of military action by the United States against Islamic terrorists and Boko Haram as an indictment of the APC-led Federal Government.
When he was asked about the recent developments in Nnamdi Kanu’s case, including the sacking of his legal team and the invitation of prominent personalities to testify, he was requested to give his views on the matter.
He said that Igbo leaders had opted for diplomacy and appeals to the Federal Government for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, noting that they had been receiving some responses which they believed could be negatively affected if they were not seen to be negotiating in good faith or if they did not take steps to prevent their wards from engaging in activities that might worsen an already dangerous situation.
He added that it was ultimately up to the people they had advised to accept or reject that guidance.
He observed that in the South-East, closing shops was a regular weekly occurrence, so closing them for an additional day was not considered a significant issue.
He further stated that Nnamdi Kanu had claimed he was defending himself because his lawyers were too afraid to mention names, and that he had vowed to reveal those names in court and expose hidden truths that would shake the nation to its core.
When he was asked why, at the last court sitting, Nnamdi Kanu had refused to mount the dock to defend himself and mention the names, he was requested to comment on the matter.
He said, "That's why observers have warned that the case has gone beyond legal arguments. It's now a battle of truth versus power, courage versus fear.
The Lagos State traditional ruler, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has warned the Federal Government of the danger ahead should Nnamdi Kanu go ahead to defend himself in court.
"He said it's the boldest and riskiest move Nigeria has ever witnessed since its creation. So, I believe that the matter will be politically resolved."
