Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed strong admiration for former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo while cautioning a master of ceremonies who introduced Obasanjo merely as a (former president).
In a video aired on SYMFONI TV, Shettima described the phrasing as a “gratuitous insult,” stressing that Obasanjo’s stature goes far beyond the confines of a simple political title.
Shettima, who spoke during a public event, noted that Obasanjo remains one of Africa’s most respected statesmen whose global influence and contributions to Nigeria cannot be reduced to a formal designation.
“To describe him as former president is a gratuitous insult,” he said, urging the MC and the audience to acknowledge Obasanjo with the reverence his legacy commands.
He went on to praise Obasanjo’s leadership qualities, identifying him as a unifying figure whose experiences and achievements continue to shape Nigeria’s political and social landscape.
Shettima added that the country must learn to celebrate its statesmen while they are alive, emphasizing that Obasanjo’s contributions to national development remain unmatched.
