Speaking during an interview on a national television programme, Kalu claimed that the pattern of insecurity suggests the involvement of political actors who want to destabilise President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Kalu argued that the wave of violence does not appear random. According to him, the timing and scale of the attacks mirror previous periods when political tension increased around election cycles. He recalled similar incidents during Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, saying that insecurity is often used as a weapon to weaken the government in power.
Although he declined to name individuals, Kalu maintained that some politicians may be sponsoring the unrest to create fear, disrupt governance, and put pressure on the current administration. He added that a mix of local collaborators and foreign interests are also fuelling the crisis for their own purposes.
The former governor claimed that terrorists and bandit groups are being backed by groups who wish to see Tinubu fail. He said some foreign actors could also be involved, using insecurity as a tool to influence political outcomes in Nigeria.
Despite his strong criticism, Kalu expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to respond to the situation. He noted that the President had cancelled several official activities to focus entirely on national security after recent major abductions. Kalu said this level of commitment shows that the government is taking the issue seriously.
He assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to rescue kidnapped victims, including schoolgirls who were recently abducted. He urged the public to remain patient and vigilant, stressing that the current security challenges represent one of the most difficult periods for the country.
Kalu also warned that identifying the individuals allegedly sponsoring terrorism must be a top priority. According to him, dismantling these networks will be key to restoring stability.
His comments come at a time when security agencies are under pressure to address rising attacks across several states. President Tinubu has also promised that no part of the country will be allowed to “bleed” while his government stands by.
