“I’ve Been Working Tirelessly to Secure Nnamdi Kanu’s Release” – Orji Kalu Opens Up

Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed that he has been quietly pushing for a political solution to the prolonged detention and legal battles involving the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during a televised interview on Sunday night, the former Abia governor said the matter has dragged on for too long and requires wisdom rather than endless courtroom confrontations.

Kalu explained that Kanu’s recent conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges has intensified discussions among political leaders, citizens, and stakeholders in the South-East. However, he believes that a strictly legal approach will not heal the deep wounds created over the years.

According to him, he has been engaging senior government officials to find a way forward. He noted that Kanu’s lawyers will pursue their appeal, but he intends to speak directly with the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, in hopes of convincing President Bola Tinubu’s administration to explore a political settlement.

Kalu added that the unrest linked to IPOB activities has severely affected the region. He lamented that many small businesses collapsed, workers lost their incomes, and families suffered emotional trauma during periods of tension and attacks.

The senator recalled that this is not the first time he has intervened in Kanu’s matter. He revealed that he played a significant role in securing Kanu’s release in 2017 during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

According to him, he worked behind the scenes with individuals close to the presidency, including Mamman Daura and the then Attorney General, Abubakar Malami.

Kalu emphasized that while many people talk about Kanu’s rights, very few acknowledge the lives lost in the South-East because of clashes, security operations, and violent reactions tied to the IPOB movement.

He argued that peace would remain difficult to achieve unless leaders address both the legal and emotional aspects of the crisis.

He maintained that a political solution would help calm tensions, restore economic life in the region, and pave the way for reconciliation between the Federal Government and aggrieved communities.

Kalu expressed hope that with dialogue, goodwill, and honest engagement, the country can move closer to resolving one of its most sensitive national issues.
