He urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to shift attention from trading accusations and instead focus on addressing the real challenges facing the state.
Senator Barau’s reaction followed claims made after the state’s 34th Executive Council Meeting. The government suggested that one of his recent comments could undermine ongoing security operations.
Barau dismissed the allegations as false, saying Nigeria’s insecurity problem demands unity and cooperation, not political blame.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the senator said the government had taken political rivalry too far by creating statements he never made.
According to him, “There was never a time Senator Barau made any remark that could weaken security efforts. These accusations are not only untrue but also a desperate attempt to damage a reputation built over decades.”
He added that security should remain above political interests, especially at a time when parts of Kano and other northern states are facing attacks from bandits.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, challenged the Kano State Government to produce evidence of the alleged statement. He insisted that no such clip or recording exists because the claims were fabricated.
He went on to criticise the current administration, saying Kano used to be one of Nigeria’s most prosperous states but has suffered setbacks due to poor governance.
Barau expressed confidence that the state can regain its strength if leadership focuses on the right priorities.
Highlighting his contributions, the senator listed several interventions he has made to support security agencies.
These include providing patrol vehicles to police units, supplying motorcycles for officers in Kano North, renovating sections of the Police Command headquarters, and building police stations in different communities.
He also facilitated the establishment of several federal security training institutions, such as the NSCDC training college in Gwarzo, a Police Service Commission training institute in Kabo, and a Nigeria Immigration Service school in Bichi.
Additionally, he funded the installation of solar streetlights to enhance night patrols and improve community safety.
The statement concluded by advising the Kano State Government to focus on effective governance rather than issuing accusations that distract from tackling insecurity.
