Two Missing Cameroonian Women Found Dead in Anambra River

Authorities in Anambra State have confirmed the recovery of two bodies believed to be part of a group of Cameroonian women who were reported missing earlier in the week.

The tragic discovery was made on Friday evening in the Omambala River, located in Anambra West Local Government Area.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the bodies were found after a coordinated search by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, professional divers, and volunteers from nearby communities.

He explained that the search team had combed the area for hours before locating the remains floating close to the riverbank.

Family members later identified the victims as Mrs. Bognou Alice and her niece, Sandra. Their bodies have been taken to a nearby mortuary for proper documentation and further investigation.

Police say forensic tests will help provide more details about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The women were among three Cameroonians allegedly kidnapped earlier this month. Police said they were taken by a group of suspects who had been pretending to offer assistance to foreign visitors.

The discovery of the two bodies has intensified the search for the remaining victim, who is still unaccounted for.

Two men linked to the case — Nonso Augustine Akpeh, 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, 44 — were arrested earlier in the investigation.

Officers say both suspects are cooperating and providing useful information. Another man, identified as Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, is still on the run.

Security operatives have launched a manhunt for him and are urging residents to share any credible leads.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep sadness over the development and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

He assured the public that the Command is committed to uncovering what happened and bringing all those responsible to justice.

He also directed tactical units to intensify surveillance and expand the search to recover the missing woman safely.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, especially within border communities hosting international visitors. Many have called for stronger monitoring and improved safety measures in the state.

Police have encouraged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities, stressing that community support remains crucial in fighting crime.
