Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged the Nigerian government to swiftly establish a military partnership with China and Russia, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen the nation’s air defense capabilities.
His comments followed recent statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who indicated that America might deploy military forces to Nigeria in response to what he described as large-scale killings of Christians in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, Gumi stressed that Nigeria must act proactively to safeguard its territory and airspace.
He specifically called for the acquisition of advanced anti-aircraft weapons from China and Russia, arguing that these systems are crucial in countering potential aerial attacks.
In his words, “What I call for the Nigerian government to do immediately is to go into a military pact with China and Russia so that they give us some anti-aircraft. That is their only weapon. The American military cannot put boots on the ground, just like they didn’t do it in Iraq or Afghanistan. What they do is bombard and decapitate leaders. This is the only thing they can do. So we should try and get very good anti-aircraft missiles now.”
Gumi’s appeal highlights a growing concern over national security and the need for Nigeria to explore strategic defense alliances amid international tensions.
