Abeokuta Unveils Maiden Polo Festival to Boost Culture, Tourism, and Local Economy

Abeokuta is preparing to host its first-ever Polo Festival, an event expected to place the Ogun State capital firmly on Nigeria’s cultural and tourism map.

The Abeokuta Polo Club has announced that the maiden edition of the festival will take place on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the club’s grounds in Kobape, along the Abeokuta–Sagamu corridor.

Organizers say the festival, themed “Abeokuta Polo, Where Tradition Meets Excellence,” is designed to celebrate more than just the sport of polo.

It will highlight the rich cultural heritage of Egba land, promote sportsmanship, create business opportunities, and attract tourists from across Nigeria and beyond.

In a statement released to journalists, the President of the Abeokuta Polo Club, Sheriff Abdulrahman, described the festival as a major step toward enhancing the socio-economic future of Kobape and its neighboring communities.

According to him, the event combines elegance, world-class hospitality, and cultural appreciation in a way Abeokuta has never witnessed before.

“This maiden edition represents much more than a sporting event,” Abdulrahman stated.

“It is an evening of class, elegance, and world-class hospitality. Beyond the thrills of polo, the festival will open new doors for tourism, commerce, and investment in the Kobape–Abeokuta axis. We are committed to creating an unforgettable experience that will become a yearly attraction for visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.”

Preparations for the festival have been ongoing for months, with the club working closely with cultural stakeholders, tourism promoters, and corporate partners to ensure a successful outing.

Organizers believe the event could evolve into one of Ogun State’s premier attractions, drawing visitors, investors, and entertainment lovers each year.

The festival will feature a combination of sporting displays, fine dining experiences, cultural showcases, and high-level business networking sessions.

Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy music, arts, and refined hospitality in an atmosphere specially curated for both local residents and high-profile attendees.

One of the major highlights of the event will be the presence of Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, who will chair the occasion.

His attendance is expected to give the festival cultural weight and attract participation from dignitaries across Ogun State.

Local businesses in the Kobape area are also gearing up for the added economic activity the event is expected to bring.

Hoteliers, transport operators, food vendors, and artisans anticipate increased patronage as visitors troop into the city for the weekend.

For many observers, this maiden festival represents a new beginning for Abeokuta—a city known for its historic Olumo Rock, vibrant markets, and deep cultural roots.

If the Polo Festival meets expectations, it could become another signature event that strengthens the state’s tourism industry and encourages further investment.
