Bandit Leader Bello Turji Alleges Former Governors Fuel Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

GUSAU, Zamfara State – Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has accused two former northern governors of fueling insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North-West, according to a viral video shared on December 15, 2025.

Turji specifically named an ex-governor of Sokoto State and a former governor of Zamfara State, claiming their actions laid the foundation for persistent violence in the region.

He alleged that past administrations armed vigilante groups, locally known as ‘Yan Banga,’ which disproportionately targeted Fulani communities, worsening insecurity.

In the video, Turji said: “We openly say that former governors of Zamfara and Sokoto states are responsible for the calamities that befell these states.”

He further called for their arrest and investigation over what he described as their roles in the ongoing security crisis.

Turji also addressed controversies surrounding his group’s interactions with Bello Matawalle, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence and former Zamfara governor.

While admitting to meetings with Matawalle during peace negotiations, Turji denied collecting any funds from him.

He stressed that his group suffered an airstrike during Matawalle’s tenure, which killed approximately 70 people, including women and children.

However, sources close to the former governors dismissed Turji’s statements as false, warning the public not to trust a terrorist’s claims.

One source remarked, “Why would anyone believe the words of a terrorist? He is presenting himself as a victim; it is all lies.”

Turji’s gang is known for kidnappings for ransom and attacks in large, mobile groups on motorcycles. The group does not follow any political or religious ideology but operates primarily for financial gain.

Recent security operations have targeted Turji’s network. Troops from the 8 Division neutralized his lieutenant, Kachalla Kallamu, during an operation in Sabon Birni, recovering multiple rifles and ammunition. The bandits reportedly retreated across a stream after a prolonged gunfight.
