Bandit Leader Bello Turji Speaks Out, Says Two Ex-Governors Allegedly Fuelling Insecurity in Nigeria

According to a report by The Vanguard on Monday, December 15, 2025, notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has alleged that two former governors from northern Nigeria played key roles in fueling the insecurity that has plagued the region for years.

Speaking in a viral video, Turji accused a former governor of Sokoto State and his counterpart from Zamfara State of laying the foundation for the persistent violence in the North-West.

He alleged that past administrations armed vigilante groups, popularly known as Yan Banga, which he claimed targeted Fulani communities and escalated cycles of reprisal attacks.

According to Turji, the actions of the former political leaders worsened tensions and directly contributed to the instability now affecting Zamfara, Sokoto, and neighbouring states.

He called for the arrest and investigation of the ex-governors over what he described as their alleged roles in the security crisis.

Turji also addressed reports linking him to Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence and former governor of Zamfara State.

He denied claims that he received money from Matawalle during peace negotiations but confirmed that he met the former governor at the Government House as part of discussions aimed at ending violence.

The bandit leader insisted that he was not aligned with Matawalle, alleging that his group suffered a deadly airstrike during Matawalle’s tenure as governor, resulting in the deaths of about 70 people, including women and children.

Turji’s armed groups are widely known for kidnapping for ransom and carrying out violent attacks across the North-West, operating with speed and mobility on motorcycles to evade security forces.
