According to a report from Vanguard, Several media outlets have reported that Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), may officially withdraw from the party within the week.
According to these reports, the speculation is linked to the party’s prolonged leadership tussles and deep internal divisions, which have continued to weaken its cohesion.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, talks surrounding Obi’s possible defection are said to be ongoing, with consultations reportedly taking place among various opposition groups.
Within the Labour Party, loyal supporters of the former Anambra State governor are said to be weighing their options amid widespread claims that Obi is preparing to leave the platform.
Obi, who flew the party’s flag in the 2023 presidential election, had earlier indicated his intention to contest again in 2027 under the LP.
Reacting to the reports, party members and supporters, popularly known as Obidients, have expressed concern.
Vanguard reported on Wednesday, December 17, that plans have reached an advanced phase for Obi to move to another political platform due to the party’s unresolved leadership crisis.
The Labour Party has been locked in months of internal turmoil, with Julius Abure, Nenadi Usman, Callistus Okafor, and Lamidi Apapa all laying claim to the party’s national leadership.
A senior official in the Nenadi Usman-led faction, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that Obi may have yielded to sustained pressure from close allies and advisers to leave the party.
The source lamented that while some members had hoped the crisis would fade, it has persisted.
He added that Obi’s political appeal transcends party boundaries, stressing that his supporters would stand by him regardless of the platform he chooses.
However, he expressed concern about party loyalists who invested heavily in building the LP into a formidable third force in 2023 and had hoped to reap political dividends in 2027.
According to him, Obi’s presence was pivotal in 2023 and could still significantly strengthen the party if he decides to stay.
