Peter Obi Vows Lawful Resistance Against Any Attempt to Rig 2027 Election

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged to resist any attempts to rig the 2027 general elections, insisting that opposition forces will use only lawful and legitimate means to defend the electoral process.

Obi made the declaration on Wednesday in Enugu while formally joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-backed opposition platform.

He called for the early verification of candidates’ academic credentials, saying such measures would help prevent disputes before the elections.

“We have all watched those who benefitted from our democracy now becoming accessories in its erosion, either through coercion or gangsterism against the opposition,” Obi said.

He warned that the celebration of electoral fraud by some individuals threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

“We cannot allow this to continue, and we will resist it. Today, we see people openly celebrating electoral fraud.

To those planning to rig elections in Nigeria ahead of 2027, we are making it clear that we will resist it by every lawful and legitimate means available,” he added.

Obi’s remarks come at a time of increasing political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with several opposition figures joining new coalitions to strengthen their chances against the ruling party.

Political analysts say Obi’s defection to the ADC could reshape the opposition landscape, potentially influencing alliances, campaign strategies, and debates over electoral reforms in the coming months.

The former Anambra State governor remains a popular figure among voters, particularly urban youths and supporters seeking political change.

His emphasis on lawful resistance and verification of candidates’ credentials signals a push for transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and engaged, emphasizing that democracy must be defended by lawful means and collective civic responsibility.
