AJ: Dad is not a fast driver, he was following speed limit and then the brakes failed- Driver's Son

A shocking twist of fate meant Anthony Joshua cheated death moments before the fatal car crash that killed two of his friends.

Media reports indicated that Joshua narrowly avoided the crash after changing his seating position inside the vehicle shortly before the incident occurred, as reported by The Nigerian Tribune.

According to accounts carried by Nigerian and UK outlets, the boxer had moved from the front seat to the rear of his SUV shortly before the collision, which resulted in the deaths of Sani Ghami and Latif Adeyole.

The two men had reportedly arrived in Nigeria only hours earlier for a holiday.

According to Nigerian Tribune, outside court, the driver’s wife was too hysterical to speak but his son told the Daily Mail his father was innocent and it was “just an unlucky accident.”

Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, 19, said: “The family is very upset by what’s happened and we are sorry for the deaths of the two people.

“Dad is not a fast driver, he was following the speed limit and then the brakes failed, he said he was pushing the pedal, but nothing was happening.

A witness told the court that the driver attempted to avoid a truck that had been parked by the roadside, but was unable to prevent a collision.

He described Adeniyi as an experienced and competent driver who had worked for Joshua for several years.

The witness further explained that at the start of the journey from Lagos, Joshua had initially been seated in the front passenger seat. However, he was later asked to move to the back to improve the driver’s visibility.

According to the account, the group was travelling to Sagamu to visit Joshua’s family after being picked up from the airport and was only minutes from their destination when the accident occurred.

The witness maintained that the incident was not caused by the driver’s negligence, arguing instead that the crash would not have happened if the truck had not been unlawfully parked along the road.

Kayode Adeniyi was subsequently arraigned before Chief Magistrate Jumoke Somefun of Court 1 on Friday.

He faces a four-count charge including dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence.
