Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has strongly condemned the United States’ military action in Venezuela, describing it as illegal and reckless while criticizing the British government for refusing to denounce the operation.
In a statement posted on his verified Twitter account, Corbyn said the bombing of a sovereign country and the capture of its president amounted to “the behaviour of a cowboy state.”
He argued that the U.S. operation, which followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington would “run” Venezuela until a transition is achieved, represents a blatant violation of international law.
Corbyn accused the United States of acting with impunity by launching a military strike and abducting Venezuelan President NicolĂ¡s Maduro, stressing that such actions undermine global norms designed to protect state sovereignty.
According to him, regardless of views on Maduro’s leadership, no country has the right to impose regime change through force.
The former Labour leader also directed sharp criticism at the UK government, calling its refusal to condemn the U.S. action “utterly shameful.”
He argued that Britain’s silence signals complicity and weakens the international rules-based order that London often claims to defend.
Corbyn warned that failure to speak out against such actions sets a dangerous precedent that could encourage further unilateral military interventions.
His comments come amid growing international backlash against the U.S. operation in Venezuela.
Protests have erupted in several countries, while political leaders and civil society groups have raised concerns about legality, escalation, and the long-term consequences of foreign military involvement in the country.
