I Hope Malami Will Pay Prince Kanu For Putting Deodorant In The Cell So He Can Breathe — Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the AAC, has criticized Nigeria’s Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, over the treatment of detainees in Kuje Prison and other detention facilities.

In an interview on Symfoni TV, Sowore commented on the poor conditions in the cells, saying, “I hope Malami will pay Prince Kanu for putting deodorant in the cell so he can breathe.”

He explained that the statement referred to detainees having to improvise just to make the cell livable due to lack of ventilation and proper care, highlighting what he described as systemic neglect by those in authority.

Sowore emphasized that Malami and other officials should be held accountable for the impunity displayed by security agencies, particularly in cases involving peaceful protesters.

He said that the situation in the detention cells underscores a broader problem of law enforcement acting without regard to the Constitution and the welfare of citizens.

He also recounted previous instances where he was subjected to unlawful arrests and detention, insisting that these actions violated his fundamental rights.

According to Sowore, the legal battles he is pursuing seek both to secure justice for victims and to send a message to government officials that impunity will not be tolerated.

Sowore concluded by stressing that accountability is essential at all levels of governance, and that officials like Malami cannot operate above the law.

He noted that protecting the rights of detainees and ordinary citizens must remain a priority for a democratic society.
