“You Can’t Be Suing The Government And Remain In Government At The Same Time–Kemi Adeosun

According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, January 1, 2026, former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has stated that her resignation from the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was influenced by “powerful enemies” within the government.

She claimed these individuals exploited a controversy surrounding her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate to force her out of office.

Adeosun spoke on Inside Sources on Channels Television, outlining the circumstances that led to her decision to resign.

She emphasized that the controversy over her NYSC certificate, which critics alleged was forged, became a focal point for those seeking her removal.

She explained that when the issue first arose, she informed President Buhari and indicated her intention to pursue legal action against the federal government to defend her integrity.

“You can’t be suing the government and remain in government at the same time,” she said. “Stepping aside was the right thing to do.”

The former minister noted that staying in the cabinet while initiating legal proceedings against the government would have been inappropriate.

She described resignation as the only viable course of action under the circumstances.

Adeosun added that President Buhari supported her choice to step down, advising that protecting one’s reputation and legacy should take precedence over retaining a public office.

She indicated that his counsel reinforced her belief that resigning was the proper decision.

She also highlighted the challenges she faced during the controversy, explaining that the scrutiny and public debate over her NYSC certificate created an environment where continuing to serve would have been untenable.

Adeosun pointed out that these pressures ultimately shaped her resignation.

Adeosun concluded that her decision to resign was guided by principle and ethics, rather than political convenience.

She emphasized that safeguarding her personal and professional integrity required stepping aside from her ministerial role to pursue the legal recourse she deemed necessary.
