According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has provided new insights into the recent foiled coup attempt led by Colonel Ma’aji, revealing that most of those implicated have been apprehended.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television the same day, General Musa described the plotters as poorly prepared and disconnected from Nigeria’s political and social realities.
He emphasized that they lacked an understanding of the current environment and the risks associated with such an attempt.
The Defence Minister explained that security agencies acted quickly to detain the suspects, ensuring that the country’s stability was maintained.
Responding to questions about whether the participants fully understood the potential consequences of their actions, he affirmed that they did, citing Nigeria’s history of public opposition to military interventions as evidence that the risks were well known.
General Musa expressed particular concern about the involvement of junior officers, suggesting that some were misled into participating without grasping the full implications of the plot.
He noted that their inexperience made them vulnerable to manipulation by senior officers, highlighting the dangers of such engagements for young military personnel.
Regarding Colonel Ma’aji, the Defence Minister described him as the main instigator, pointing out that his planning was disconnected from ground realities.
He added that the coup attempt lacked coordination and strategic insight, which ultimately led to its failure.
General Musa stressed that all individuals involved, regardless of rank, would face the full force of the law.
He underscored the importance of awareness among military personnel about Nigeria’s democratic framework, emphasizing that understanding the nation’s political and social context is crucial to prevent similar incidents.
Reflecting on the plight of the junior officers caught up in the plot, General Musa said, “My concern is for those young officers who didn’t understand what was happening and were drawn into this mess. Now, they must face the consequences of their actions.”
He concluded by reaffirming that participation in such activities carries serious legal consequences, and accountability would be enforced to uphold the country’s democratic institutions.
