Hakeem Baba Ahmed, former Special Adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima, has spoken publicly about the state of leadership and power distribution in Nigeria, raising issues that touch both the north and the south.
He made these remarks in a recorded video that later circulated widely and drew attention because of his long history within the federal system.
The video was shared by Symfoni TV, which helped bring his words to a larger audience across different parts of the country.
Ahmed stated that he has been involved in the federal government in different roles since 1993, giving him direct experience with several administrations and political transitions.
He explained that he has worked with eight different presidents, which places him in a position to compare leadership styles and the way power has been exercised over time.
According to him, the overall quality of people leading Nigeria has continued to decline, and this problem affects both major regions of the country.
He said this decline has created uncertainty among citizens, especially when it comes to identifying who truly represents their interests at the highest level.
Ahmed pointed out that many northerners with some political awareness struggle to name a single leader who clearly speaks for the region.
He noted that in constitutional terms, people are often told that the vice president represents the north, but this does not always match public perception.
He further said that President Bola Tinubu has gathered more authority around himself than any other Nigerian leader he has worked with.
Ahmed warned that such concentration of power is not healthy for Nigeria’s democracy, as it reduces balance and limits shared decision making.
These remarks together suggest that leadership confusion, declining standards, and centralized power are connected problems that could weaken trust in governance and strain regional unity.
He said: "And the collapse of quality in the people who are leading Nigeria, both in the north and the south, continues.
"As we speak today, if you ask a northerner who has some knowledge, who is the leader in the north? Who? In constitutional terms, they'll tell you it's the vice president, Kashim Shettima.”
