Nwebonyi: I Must Tell You It's Wrong For You To Refer To An Elderly That He's From The Minority –Ndume

A heated exchange between Senators Onyekachi Nwebonyi and Hanga during a Senate committee meeting was calmed after Senator Ali Ndume stepped in to restore order.

In a video shared by Viable TV, the disagreement began when Senator Hanga, who was chairing the session, limited Nwebonyi to five minutes while questioning the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Nwebonyi protested, arguing that other senators were allowed to speak longer.

The situation quickly escalated, with both lawmakers interrupting each other and making personal remarks.

As tensions rose, Ndume intervened to remind his colleagues that the meeting was not a private one but was being watched by the public.

He stressed the need for senators to behave respectfully, especially in front of cameras.

According to him, lawmakers must always remember they are colleagues and should avoid saying things they would not like to hear said about themselves.

Ndume also addressed a comment made by Nwebonyi during the argument about minority status.

He stated that it was wrong to refer to an elderly leader in a disrespectful way because of political differences. He emphasized that age and leadership should be treated with respect, regardless of party affiliation.

However, his intervention didn't completely help to calm the situation as another senator had to intervene to calm tension, and shifted attention back to the purpose of the meeting, which was to review the ministry’s budget and projects.

In his words, "I must tell you here that it's wrong for you to refer to an elderly person, to a leader, that he's from the minority. I must tell you the truth."
