In an interview with Daily Independent, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, has shared an alleged case of corruption involving a past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.
Agbakoba said he was aware of a former GMD who secretly kept large sums of foreign currency in a private residence, according to him, the official would move dollars into a bungalow, especially before travelling home for the weekend.
Agbakoba explained that the former oil chief did not realise that his personal driver was observing his actions, he said the driver allegedly noticed the repeated movement of cash and became suspicious of the source and purpose of the money.
The senior lawyer added that the situation took a dramatic turn when the driver decided to report what he had seen, the report, he said, led to an investigation by authorities, as a result, the former GMD was arrested and later jailed.
Agbakoba used the story to illustrate what he described as deep-rooted corruption within Nigeria’s oil sector in the past and argued that the NNPC had for many years operated with limited transparency and weak oversight, creating room for abuse of power.
According to him, such incidents reflect how public institutions were turned into channels for private enrichment and suggested that the lack of strict controls and accountability mechanisms made it easy for top officials to divert public funds without immediate detection.
"I know about one particular GMD of NNPC, who didn’t know that his driver was watching him as he was packing dollars inside one bungalow. The driver reported him and they jail him," he said.
