Biafra:UK PM Showed Enahoro a Picture Of Gen Murtala With a Gun On The Head of A 13yr-Old—Ogunkeyede

Jumoke Ogunkeyede has recounted a tense diplomatic moment during the Nigerian Civil War, describing how a British leader confronted Nigerian officials over alleged actions by federal troops during the conflict.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, Ogunkeyede said nationalist leader Anthony Enahoro once led a Nigerian delegation to meet the British Prime Minister at the time, Harold Wilson, to seek financial assistance for Nigeria’s war effort against Biafra.

According to the account, the British leader raised concerns about reports of Nigerian soldiers harming children during the war. Ogunkeyede said Wilson opened a drawer and brought out photographs, which he showed to the Nigerian delegation.

One of the images allegedly showed military officer Murtala Mohammed pointing a gun at the head of a boy said to be about 13 years old. Other disturbing photographs were also reportedly presented during the meeting.

The British Prime Minister reportedly told the delegation that Britain would only consider assisting Nigeria after such incidents stopped.

Ogunkeyede said Enahoro later returned to Nigeria and discussed the development with senior government figure Obafemi Awolowo. Awolowo advised him to present the message and the photographs honestly at the Supreme Military Council meeting.

When the matter and the images were reportedly presented to the council, Murtala Mohammed became furious. Ogunkeyede said the situation caused tension within the meeting, and Mohammed was later sent to the battlefield following the chaotic incident.

In his words, "Harold Wilson opened a drawer and brought some Pictures and showed to them, he showed Gen Muritala Mohammed in one picture with a gun on the head of a 13-year-old boy."
