During a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Umar Sani spoke about the current leadership struggles within the People's Democratic Party (PDP), sharing his views on the behavior of important party members and the reasons behind some legal and political choices that are being discussed.
While in the interview, Sani mentioned remarks made by Nyesom Wike about possibly bringing the issue to the Supreme Court. He quoted Wike, who said, “Wike is saying we should not go to the Supreme Court because he knows the implications.”
Sani interpreted this statement as Wike’s understanding of the possible results that could follow if the situation is taken to the highest legal authority in the country.
He warned that going down this route might prolong the conflict and make it harder to resolve internal issues within the party.
Sani pointed out that Wike seems to be motivated by a desire to keep the PDP united. He highlighted that the party currently lacks a fully recognized National Working Committee, which could complicate matters if court proceedings drag on.
He believes that lengthy legal battles could increase divisions among party members and shift attention away from more urgent political concerns.
He further mentioned that even with the leadership issues, the party’s Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee are still active. Sani stated that these bodies are working to handle the conflict, uphold party rules, and maintain stability within the establishment.
He argued that by not rushing to the Supreme Court, party leadership can focus on efforts for reconciliation and essential tasks, including signing up new members and preparing for upcoming elections.
Moreover, Sani stressed that deciding not to quickly appeal to the Supreme Court should not be seen as a flaw. Instead, he characterized this choice as a strategic political move that takes into account the timing and wider political context.
He mentioned that Wike and other key figures in the PDP are prioritizing dialogue, negotiation, and compromise to help strengthen the party as they approach future political challenges.
In his final thoughts, Sani urged PDP members to have faith in the party’s internal processes and to support the ongoing reconciliation initiatives.
He emphasized that careful decisions, rooted in legal knowledge and political insight, are vital for maintaining the party’s reputation and continuing its role in Nigeria’s democratic system.
