Professor Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has offered fresh insights into the controversy surrounding the reported detention of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Speaking in an interview on Trust TV, Yusuf reflected on El-Rufai’s current situation in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), pointing to what he described as notable political developments preceding the incident.
His comments come amid sustained public interest in the case and its wider implications.
Drawing attention to past events, Yusuf recalled a moment involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and El-Rufai, suggesting that the former governor had initially planned a different path.
“He wanted to go and continue his studies but we have seen public clips where the president on the podium said ‘Nasir, please don't leave, I want you to stay and work for me,’” Yusuf stated.
According to him, the statement reflects a previously close working relationship between the two political figures, making recent developments a subject of deeper scrutiny.
He implied that such public expressions of support in the past contrast with the present situation, thereby raising questions among observers about shifting alliances within Nigeria’s political space.
Yusuf’s remarks contribute to the broader national conversation on governance, accountability, and the interplay of politics and law enforcement.
While authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to fighting corruption, analysts note that high-profile cases often attract heightened attention due to their political undertones.
