Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has sparked conversations online after making comments about political party membership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared through his official X account on Monday, May 11, 2026, Olayinka stated that any individual who was not officially registered with a political party as of May 10, 2026, would not be eligible to contest elections under that platform.

His remarks quickly attracted attention on social media, especially amid ongoing discussions surrounding the political future of former Anambra State governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The comments generated mixed reactions from political observers and supporters across different parties, with many Nigerians debating how party regulations and political alignments could shape the outcome of the 2027 elections.

Peter Obi, who emerged as one of the major contenders in the 2023 presidential race, previously moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Labour Party shortly before the election.

That political switch significantly boosted his national profile and attracted widespread support, particularly among young voters.

However, Olayinka’s recent statement appeared to suggest that the former Anambra governor may now be restricted in terms of future political platforms available to him.

According to the interpretation of his remarks, Obi may only be able to participate in the next election under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The statement has continued to fuel political discussions online, with supporters and critics offering different interpretations regarding party membership rules and their possible implications for politicians preparing for the 2027 presidential election.
